There’s nothing more beautiful than a black and white portrait. There’s nothing distracting about it, It’s as clear as night and day.
I love creating a portrait that goes from deep blacks to nice crisp whites. I find black and white photos to be quite romantic and can evoke a feelings that color photography cannot give.
Back in 2001 I attended the Academy of Art College (now university) because I received a summer scholarship for photography. There I spent the summer learning from documentary photographer Frank Espada, who was known for his photos from the civil rights era. In his course we only shot on black and white Ilford film and I learned so much from him about processing film in the darkroom, and printing our images.
And although he is not on this earth any more he still lives in my memory as a wonderful teacher who had a witty personality and who taught me as a young girl to see in black and white.
